Check Relay is a network of commercial air and ground carriers providing systemwide check transportation services on behalf of the nation's 12 Federal Reserve Banks. The network links Federal Reserve check processing offices and depository institutions to provide a unified national check delivery service. The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta administers the network and contracts for related services based on competitive bids.
The Check Relay network consists of both weekday and weekend systems that function in different ways. The dispatch and delivery schedules of both systems are coordinated with Reserve Banks' deposit deadlines to improve the availability of funds to depository institutions and to minimize check float.
