ATLANTA FED CHOOSES CONSTRUCTION MANAGERATLANTA--The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta today announced that the Bank has chosen a construction manager for its new Atlanta headquarters. Subject to final contract negotiations, the Bank selected Beers Construction Co. in association with C.D. Moody Construction Co. Inc., The Integral Group, and Torcon Inc.

In making the announcement, Jack Guynn (pronounced "gwin"), president and CEO of the Atlanta Fed, said, "The Atlanta Fed's new headquarters will be a complex facility, incorporating a highly automated operations component and advanced security systems with more traditional office space and specialized meeting facilities. I'm really excited about the collaborative strength these firms will bring to this project, including both the technical expertise our facility will require and experience in the Atlanta construction market."
Beers, which traces its origins to 1907, is the largest construction firm in Georgia. It has been responsible for such projects as the Georgia Dome and the Atlanta Olympic Stadium, as well as a number of large office buildings, including the Atlanta Federal Center, 191 Peachtree, NationsBank, Home Depot, UPS, Coca-Cola, and BellSouth.
C.D. Moody, established in 1987, is an Atlanta-based, minority-owned firm with experience on the Atlanta Federal Center and Underground Atlanta projects. The firm has teamed with Beers on many projects and will take lead responsibility for small-business and minority contracting.
The Integral Group is another Atlanta-based, minority-owned firm. Founded in 1993, the Integral Group adapted a number of existing venues such as the Omni Coliseum and the Georgia World Congress Center for the 1996 Olympic Games and managed the redevelopment of Techwood Homes, the nation's oldest public housing project.
Torcon, which is based in Westfield, N.J., and was founded in 1965, has served as a construction manager on recent projects for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. It brings to the project expertise in such areas as vault construction, automated materials handling systems and security.
The role of construction manager is to guide a project from the planning stage, including reviews for the most cost-effective construction methods, budgeting, scheduling and bidding, to final construction. In the course of this process, additional small and minority-owned firms will have opportunities to participate.
The Atlanta Fed conducted a nationwide search before settling on the Beers-Torcon-Integral-Moody team.
In July 1996, the Bank selected the architectural firm of Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart & Associates to design its new headquarters, with the New York-based firm of Robert A.M. Stern as the project's lead designer. Beers Construction Co. has worked on more than 10 projects with Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart & Associates.
The Atlanta Fed announced in October 1995 that it had purchased an 11-acre site at 10th and Peachtree streets for a new headquarters building that would contain approximately 750,000 square feet. Plans call for Fed employees to begin to occupy the building late in the year 2000.
