Financial Update (October-December 1997)
New $50 Bill Introduced
he Federal Reserve and the U.S. Treasury Department introduced the new Series 1996 $50 bill at the end of October. In addition to security features similar to those found on the new-design Series 1996 $100 note introduced in March 1996, the new $50 bill includes special features that make the notes easier to identify for the low-vision population.
The new $50 bills were distributed to depository institutions in the Sixth District from the Atlanta Fed's six branches at the end of October.
There will be no recall or devaluation of the older-series bills, which will be removed from circulation upon deposit with the Federal Reserve and replaced with the new series.
