Marie Gooding, First Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Atlanta FedThe Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta announced that after 31 years of service, first vice president and chief operating officer Marie Gooding will retire on June 29, 2018.

"We are very grateful to Marie for her many significant contributions to the Atlanta Fed and to the Federal Reserve System over her career," said Raphael Bostic, Atlanta Fed president and chief executive officer. "I feel very fortunate to have had Marie guide my transition to Atlanta. The rapport we very quickly established helped ensure that our Bank continues to perform at a very high level. I congratulate her on her pending retirement and thank her for her service. She will be missed by many."

Gooding has served as first vice president and chief operating officer since March 2011. In this role, she oversees the day-to-day operations of the Atlanta Fed, including all operating and support activities at the corporate headquarters in Atlanta and at the branch offices in Birmingham, Jacksonville, Miami, Nashville, and New Orleans. She is also vice chair of the Bank's Management Committee, a member of the Discount Committee that reviews District discount window lending, and backup to the president of the Atlanta Fed in the execution of his monetary policy responsibilities.

In addition to her Atlanta Fed responsibilities, Gooding is the retail payments product director for the Federal Reserve System. Her national responsibilities in this area include the management and direction of check collection and Automated Clearing House (ACH) products and services that the Federal Reserve System provides. She is also a member of the Conference of First Vice Presidents and is involved in various projects and initiatives to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the Federal Reserve's System-wide operations.

During her tenure at the Bank, Gooding has used a collaborative leadership style to guide the areas she managed, gaining a broad and varied background in both the operations of the bank and the corporate support functions. She has held a series of officer positions with increasing responsibility, including serving as interim president from March 2017 to June 2017, during which time she represented the Atlanta Fed at the Federal Open Market Committee.

Prior to joining the Bank, Gooding taught secondary math in the Georgia public school system. Gooding's service as a teacher instilled in her the economic importance of students achieving success in high school. She is past chair of the board of directors of Communities in Schools of Georgia, which is focused on empowering students to stay in school, and is past chair and a current member of the board of trustees of the Georgia Council on Economic Education.

A native of Monroe, Georgia, Gooding graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in secondary math education from Old Dominion University. She has also completed Duke University's Advanced Management Program and the Harvard Advanced Management Program.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta serves the Sixth Federal Reserve District, which encompasses Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and sections of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. As part of the nation's central banking system, the Atlanta Fed participates in setting national monetary policy, supervises numerous commercial banks, and provides a variety of financial services to depository institutions and the U.S. government.
