New Feature Brings Clarity, Focus to Changing Supervisory Landscape

The third-quarter issue of Financial Update launched a new feature by Michael Johnson, senior vice president of Supervision and Regulation at the Atlanta Fed. Johnson's quarterly feature, "ViewPoint," covers a range of bank supervisory and regulatory issues, with the goal of bringing "a measure of clarity and focus to what at times can be a confusing supervisory landscape," he explained.

In addition to Johnson's commentary, "ViewPoint" will include each quarter "State of the District," an overview of banking conditions in the Sixth Federal Reserve District. The third-quarter report highlights the continued improvement in commercial banks' performance during the second quarter of 2010, attributable to the declines in loan-loss provisioning. The report notes that, meanwhile, loan growth continued to stall. The inaugural installment of "ViewPoint" also includes an overview of the commercial real estate outlook and an update on national banking trends.
